Hematology
Erasmus University Medical Center
Welcome to the Hematology website of the Erasmus University Medical Center.
The molecular diagnostics unit focuses on adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) and myeloproliferative disorders (MPN). Acquired genetic abnormalities (chromosomal translocations, insertion / deletions, point mutations) are demonstrated using various molecular techniques, such as RT-PCR, RQ-PCR, dHPLC, Sanger sequencing) and the presence and absence of these are determined.
Part of the routine molecular diagnostics is already being performed with next generation sequencing (NGS) equipment, for other determinations it is still in development.
The research department is part of the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute.
Research is being done into the development of prognosis for adult AML and ALL patients. This is in close cooperation with the HOVON (Haemato Oncology Foundation for Adults in the Netherlands). The HOVON treated AML and ALL patients in large clinical studies, in which the molecular diagnostics and biobanking for AML is carried out centrally by the Hematology department at Erasmus MC.
